Household Chemicals

Many of the cleaning and home improvement products contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that can react with sunlight to form ozone pollution.

VOCs can have harmful effects on indoor and outdoor air pollution. Careful planning and proper use of household products, though, can prevent many of the negative impacts these chemicals can have on our health and environment.

  • If you must use an oil or solvent-based product, do so in the evening to avoid day heat.
  • Apply paint with brushes and rollers instead of using spray paints.

  • Plan refinishing projects in the spring or fall when temperatures are cooler.

  • Use only water-based or latex paints.
