Fire

Burning five pounds of leaves releases an entire pound of air pollution, including particulate matter.

Smoke from fire releases harmful pollution into the air we breathe, including very small particulate matter. Responsible fire use can keep the impact to a minimum.

Good

  • If using a charcoal grill, light coals with a charcoal chimney instead of lighter fluids that emit harmful vapors.
  • If using a wood fireplace, install a fireplace insert that meets EPA specifications.
  • Burn only dry, seasoned wood.
  • Do not burn leaves. This is illegal in some counties, including Marion County. Learn more about open burning.

Better

  • If using a charcoal grill, light coals with an electric starter.
  • Reduce or eliminate wood fireplace or fire pit use.

Best

  • Use a propane or natural gas grill instead of charcoal.
  • Use gas instead of wood.
