Gas Can Exchange Program
Brought to you by R.W. Armstrong
Want to improve air quality? Kick the can—the gas can.
Old portable gas cans emit fumes that could make you or someone you love sick. That's why Knozone and R.W. Armstrong have partnered to allow residents to exchange their old cans for new 2.5 gallon ones.
Over 300 old cans have been exchanged to date!
By using newer gas cans made of materials that minimize permeation losses and include features such as no secondary vent holes and spill-proof, shut-off valves, harmful gasoline fumes can be reduced by 75 percent. That equals about 16.8 tons of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) per day. The emissions reduction potential from this strategy is equivalent to removing 195,000 cars from the metro area highways.
The city plans to provide 10,000 new environmentally friendly cans to citizens by trade over the next two years. In addition to other special events, subsequent gas can exchange opportunities will be available at the city's ToxDrop program collection sites (excluding the Belmont site location.) The ToxDrop program allows residents to safely dispose of household hazardous wastes at several locations throughout the city.
And remember, Clean Air Is In!
